What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is the name for fat collections that push against the connective tissue under the skin. It often appears on the thighs, stomach and bottom (buttocks). Cellulite makes the surface of the skin look puffy and wrinkled, or appear dimpled.

It is different from lipedema, which is a medical condition that causes excess fat to build up in the lower body. Lipedema most often affects the buttocks, thighs and calves. The upper arms are sometimes affected. It does not affect the hands or feet.

Lipedema causes the skin to become sensitive. As lipedema worsens, it can affect the ability to walk.

Cellulite is a cosmetic condition. It also most often affects the stomach, bottom and thighs and also looks like an orange peel. Cellulite is not painful.

Who does Cellulite affect?

Cellulite affects both men and women. However, women have cellulite at a much higher rate than men.

How common is Cellulite condition?

Cellulite is very common. Between 80% and 90% of all women who have gone through puberty have cellulite.

Genetics, gender, age, body fat and skin thickness determine how much cellulite you have and how visible it is. As you age, your skin loses elasticity and can make the appearance of cellulite more obvious. Weight gain can also make the appearance of cellulite more prominent.

Although obese people have pronounced cellulite, it is not unusual for very thin people to notice the appearance of cellulite.

How does Cellulite affect the body?

Cellulite does not affect general physical health and does not hurt. However, some people find it unsightly.

What are the symptoms of Cellulite?

Cellulite looks like lumpy or dimpled skin. cellulite can be seen all the time or only at that time when you are pinching your body skin. Cellulite affects the stomach, thighs and bottom.

  • Cellulite has four degrees:
  • Grade 0: simple you've no cellulite on your skin.
  • Grade 1: Skin is smooth when standing, but slight dimpling occurs when sitting down.
  • Grade 2: Your skin dimples moderately when you stand up or sit down.
  • Grade 3: Your skin has large, visible dimpling when you stand up or sit down. The skin also exhibits deep peaks and valleys.

What is the main cause of Cellulite?

It is not known what exactly causes cellulite. Cellulite forms when the fibrous bands that connect the skin to the underlying muscle tighten irregularly. This tightening pulls the skin down and the normal layer of fat beneath the skin pushes up. The result is a wrinkled appearance of the skin.

It is also not known why cellulite is more common in women than in men. One theory involves bands connecting the skin, hypodermis (subcutaneous tissue) and deep muscle layers. In men, the fibers that make up the connective bands cross each other. In women, the fibers that make up the connective bands run in the same direction and are equally spaced (parallel). Parallel stripes can show wrinkling better than cross stripes.

Another theory is that a higher amount of the hormone estrogen can cause cellulite. Cellulite are more likely to develops when women are producing more of estrogen, this is usually occurring during adolescence i.e., between childhood to adulthood or it can be during pregnancy.

Is it possible to get rid of Cellulite?

People of all body shapes have cellulite. It is natural, with a wrinkled or dimpled appearance due to the way the fat pushes against the connective tissue. You cannot get rid of it completely, nor should it bother you too much, considering that it is a common and normal thing that does not reflect the state of health and does not endanger a person.

Cosmetic surgeons now a days are using a different varieties for cure and they temporarily lessen the presence of cellulite. These treatments include:

  • Deep massage to swell the skin.
  • Acoustic wave therapy to break up cellulite using sound waves.
  • Laser treatments are helping in thickening the infected skin.
  • Liposuction to remove fat. However, this is deep fat, not necessarily cellulite.
  • Creams and lotions containing caffeine or retinol 0.3%.
  • Spa treatments, which can temporarily make cellulite less visible.
  • Vacuum-assisted precise tissue release to cut tissue and fill dimpled skin.
  • Radiofrequency, ultrasound, infrared light or radial pulses to heat the skin.

Can there be drugs or traditional treatments to reduce the appearance of Cellulite?

Ginkgo biloba is an herbal product commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. Studies show that ginkgo biloba can cause an increase in blood flow to many parts of the body. An increase in blood flow to the stomach, legs and bottom can reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Grape seed extract comes from grinding grape seeds. Traditional European medicine has long used grape seed extract. Like ginkgo biloba, grape seed extract can increase blood flow to many parts of the body, which can reduce the appearance of cellulite, although it doesn't guarantee anything.

Dry brushing involves using a dry brush with stiff bristles to massage the skin. When you brush your dry skin, it temporarily swells due to increased blood circulation. It is claimed that when you are using a dry brush it may reduce cellulite. However, there is no evidence that dry brushing reduces the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite appears to disappear, but it is likely a temporary reduction as the skin has swollen.

Many people use handheld massagers, foam rollers, or cellulite rollers to try to break up cellulite. There is no evidence to suggest that these tools improve the long-term appearance of cellulite.

How can you prevent the appearance of Cellulite?

There is nothing you can do to guarantee that you will not get cellulite. There is no direct and unique link between exercise, diet and cellulite, although a healthy diet and regular exercise are always preferable to a sedentary lifestyle and disordered diet.
